Promethean Power Systems
Promethean’s thermal energy storage system uses proprietary phase-change materials to store large amounts of thermal energy. This thermal battery enables installation and operation of distributed cold-storage systems without the need for a diesel generator, making it economically viable to chill milk and produce at the source in weak and off-grid environments where power is unreliable.
The company participated in a number of TechEmerge pilots which are described below. More data on the pilot experience is available from the report "TechEmerge Sustainable Cooling Innovation Program: Results and Lessons Learned."

Thermal Battery for Refrigerated Transport
At the heart of the technology is a Thermal Storage System that is fitted on a truck. The technology operates as a battery that stores thermal (cold) energy. The battery consists of a mixture of Phase-Change Material (PCM) and a Heat Transfer Fluid (HTF). To charge the battery, a refrigeration cycle that cools the HTF and freezes the PCM is run. The compressor runs on standard grid electricity and requires about four hours of intermittent power to fully charge the battery, which then provides 8-12 hours of cooling.
